‘Garden’ is an example of one of Larissa Cox’s ‘collage books’ – unique hand-bound books which, upon opening, reveal intricate hand-cut three-dimensional collages within their pages – delicate, dreamlike paper worlds in miniature.
The collage books begin as large blank-paged books that she binds by hand. Onto the pages of each book elements are then attached, based on her own photographs or found images, whilst other parts of the book are finely cut away by hand using a craft knife.
As a result, beneath the cover of the book, a large, intricate three-dimensional picture gradually forms. The book always remains a book: all of the individual pages can still be turned, and by leafing through the book new elements of the collage are uncovered that on first glance were hidden from view.
‘Garden’, a wildwood that is both enticing and forbidding, explores the borderline between the wild and the human-made.
About the Artist
Larissa Cox, born 1973, is a British book artist and bookbinder, living and working in Vienna, Austria, since 2000. She specialises in creating ‘collage books’: unique hand-bound books which, upon opening, reveal intricate hand-cut three-dimensional collages within their pages.
Largely self-taught as an artist, her journey in bookbinding began in 1991 through a spell of work experience at Bayntun’s Bookbindery, Bath, UK, and has also since taken her to the renowned Centro del bel Libro in Ascona, Switzerland.
In 2001 came the first impulse to combine in a unique manner bookbinding with collage work, and so create intricate, hand-cut, three-dimensional works hidden within the pages of a book – miniature, dreamlike worlds in paper – her collage books. This has been her main artistic focus ever since. In addition, she regularly runs bookbinding workshops in her own studio space in Vienna, her ‘Boundless Bookbindery’. Her work has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions of artists’ books and paper art.
